Mitsubishi Electric vs Daikin Aircon: Which to Choose in Singapore?

Mitsubishi Electric aircon installed in a Singapore residential property

The two brands that come up in every BTO and resale renovation conversation. After installing and servicing hundreds of both, here's the honest comparison — including which one we'd put in our own homes.

Quietness — Mitsubishi wins narrowly

For most bedrooms, Mitsubishi Electric's Starmex series is the quietest you can buy in Singapore — typical noise level is 19–21 dB at lowest fan setting. Daikin iSmile is close at 21–23 dB. If you have a light sleeper or your bed is right under the unit, Mitsubishi has a real edge.

Energy efficiency — Daikin slightly ahead

Daikin's inverter algorithm is more aggressive at ramping down once the room hits temperature. In our customer's electricity bills (we ask), Daikin saves roughly 5–8% more per month than equivalent-tier Mitsubishi. Both are way better than non-inverter units.

Build quality + longevity

Both are excellent. We see 10–14 years of reliable life from both brands with proper servicing. Mitsubishi's compressors tend to outlast Daikin's slightly (we've seen 15-year-old Starmex still running), but Daikin's electronics seem less prone to early board failure.

Service network — both are strong in SG

Both have:

  • Authorised service centres island-wide
  • Parts availability for 10+ years
  • Reasonable warranty response times

If your unit breaks down in Year 6, both brands' authorised technicians can come out within 2–3 days. Compare this to off-brands (Samsung, Hisense) where parts can take 2–4 weeks.

Price reality

For a System 3 install:

  • Mitsubishi Starmex tends to run $200–$400 more than equivalent Daikin iSmile
  • The quietness difference is real but subjective
  • The efficiency difference is real and adds up over years

Over a 10-year ownership: Daikin saves you ~$500 in electricity vs Mitsubishi. Mitsubishi costs ~$300 more upfront. So Daikin wins on total cost of ownership by ~$200 — but Mitsubishi wins on "I can sleep through the night" comfort.

Our honest recommendation

  • Bedroom only? Mitsubishi Starmex — quietness wins
  • Whole-flat install where you'll run it 12+ hours/day? Daikin iSmile — efficiency wins
  • Mixed use household, want "best brand"? Either is right — flip a coin

Frequently asked questions

Why don't you install Samsung aircon?

We service Samsung units already in customers' homes — but we don't install new ones. Reason: Samsung's local service support and parts availability lag significantly behind Mitsubishi and Daikin. If a board fails in Year 5, parts can take weeks.

Are Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Mitsubishi Electric the same brand?

No — they're two different companies sharing the Mitsubishi name. Mitsubishi Electric (the Starmex series) is what we recommend for residential. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries is more common in commercial/industrial.

Are inverter and non-inverter aircon a big difference?

Yes — for daily use, inverter saves 30–50% electricity. The upfront cost difference (~$200/unit) pays back within 18–24 months for normal usage. We don't install non-inverter for new BTOs anymore — not worth it.
